Text description provided by the architects. A rainbow for the desert of Pachacutec.
The lack of rain in the Peruvian coast makes for extreme living conditions in the slums: in villa Pachacutec, children live in the sand without shade and disconnected from all vegetation, while their parents work all day in the city 2 hours away.
On the initiative and financing of renowned Peruvian chef Gaston Acurio and with the support of the Ministry of Social Inclusion of Teachers and the toiling chores of parents from Early Childhood Education Center No.129.
We have built an orchard and a kitchen where children from 3-5 years are connected with our biodiversity, learn to grow food, to cook with their teachers, parents and grandparents with the recipes of their environment and thus strengthen their identity while they learn to love healthy flavors and eat them at the table chatting with peers, while admiring the sea from the window.
How do we garden on the sand and without water? For this purpose we've worked alternative techniques for soil generation and irrigation with the agronomist Luis Camacho, who has also chosen a variety of crops that require little water.
For now, even if there is no rain in the Pachacutec desert, we have a rainbow!
